Worker suffers cardiac arrest from lightning strike

On Behalf of | Jun 14, 2019 | Workers' Compensation

Workers’ compensation is something that workers should be entitled to if they are harmed while on the job. Whether they’re traveling for work, fall in an office or are hurt on a construction site, the point of workers’ compensation is to make sure they get the financial support and medical care they need at no cost to them. Additionally, those who are off work for several days may qualify for a portion of their lost wages, so that they don’t have to worry about the time they missed on the job.

In Florida, workers are hurt all the time. One thing that you should be aware of is the risk of hazardous weather conditions. Take for example this worker who was injured by a nearby lightning strike. The worker, a landscaper, had previously taken cover from a thunderstorm, but he went back out in the storm to collect a shovel that had been left in the rain. That’s when a lightning strike took place nearby, sending him into cardiac arrest. He was taken to the hospital with injuries, but his condition after receiving medical care wasn’t released.

It’s important to note that Florida is the leader in lightning strikes. It gets more lightning strikes per square mile than any other state in the U.S. It is also the perennial leader for lightning fatalities in the United States.

If you’re on the job and hazardous weather approaches, take advice from this story and take cover. A rusted piece of equipment can always be replaced; Your health and safety are far more important and worth protecting.
