Recognize heatstroke and save a life

Workers’ compensation is an excellent tool for protecting workers who are hurt on the job. Whether it’s someone working for a company like Disney or an individual working for a construction team, the majority of workers should have access to workers’ compensation in the case of injuries.

One injury that is particularly common in Florida is heatstroke. This is something that’s smart to discuss with your employer and co-workers because it has the potential to lead to death. Heatstroke has many signs and symptoms long before it become deadly, so with good training, lives can be saved.

Why is heatstroke common in Florida?

Heatstroke is common in areas with higher temperatures and where the humidity is high. When the body can’t sweat adequately to cool, it may overheat. People who are dehydrated may be at an even higher risk of developing this condition, especially in hot, humid climates.

Heatstroke occurs when your body temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit. At that time, you may notice symptoms such as:

  • Vomiting
  • Nausea
  • Racing heart
  • Headache
  • Changes in sweating
  • Seizures or delirium
  • Flushed skin

These symptoms are relatively easy to notice, which is why it’s important that all workers are trained to recognize them. If you or someone you’re working with is exhibiting these symptoms, it’s time to call 911 and seek help.

How can you help someone who is suffering from heatstroke?

If someone is suffering from heatstoke, it’s important to cool them quickly. Remove excess clothing items and move them to a cooler area, either indoors or in the shade. Begin cooling them with cold water, a fan, ice packs or other cold items until help arrives. This quick thinking could help save a life.
