Green construction can come with benefits and hazards for workers

The construction industry is not likely one that will come to an end any time soon, and as a construction worker, you likely appreciate that idea. As areas across Florida and the country continue to change, new buildings pop up, older structures get renovations and various other construction projects take place. Though the industry may remain a constant for the foreseeable future, the ways in which construction takes place is changing.

These days, being environmentally friendly and conscious of the impacts certain materials and building methods can have on the environment is important. As a result, many people and companies are adopting green construction methods for their projects. While these methods may benefit the environment, it does have its pros and cons when it comes to your safety as a construction worker.

Benefits of green construction for workers

Because green construction focuses on using safe building materials and less hazardous chemicals, you and other construction workers are less likely to face exposure to hazardous chemicals and pollutants while on the job. This can greatly reduce serious health risks that you likely often face while using other common building materials.

Additionally, because using green construction materials and building methods is still relatively new, workers typically receive training on how to use the materials and methods correctly. This can benefit you because fresh training can help you better recognize potential risks and reduce the chance of an accident taking place due to a lack of proper knowledge and training.

Downsides of green construction for workers

Of course, new materials and methods mean that you are less familiar and less experienced in using them. Plus, some of the techniques used during green construction can have risks, even if workers complete them properly. Though training can certainly help you better understand these materials and methods, accidents can still occur due to a lack of experience. Mistakes are likely when learning anything new, and unfortunately, construction-related accidents can lead to serious injuries for those on the job.

Workers’ compensation

If you suffer injuries while working on a green construction project, or any construction project for that matter, you could face major setbacks. In addition to the physical pain you probably experience, you may also have to contend with financial difficulties from medical bills and lost wages. Fortunately, workers’ compensation benefits may be able to help you reduce the struggles you face in the aftermath of a work-related accident.
