Stay cool and prevent heat-related illnesses

Florida is hot, humid and extremely dangerous for the workers who have to be outside in the elements. Even though the local area is known for popular attractions and is a tourist destination, that doesn’t mean that entertainers and workers can stand to be in the heat any longer than others. In fact, people who are expected to wear heavy costumes or to walk around amusement parks providing security may need more breaks than others.

It can be hard to cope with the heat in the workplace, especially when you’re not working inside. However, employers are aware of the special steps they need to take to help their employees stay safe.

Did you know that your employer should be giving you more breaks and providing you with areas where you can escape the heat?

Whether it’s an air-conditioned room that you can sit in for a few minutes every hour, bottles of water ready for you when you need them or a car with air conditioning that is always on at your work site, having somewhere to go if you’re hot is key to reducing the chances of serious heat-related illnesses.

Extreme heat can cause many problems for people who have pre-existing diseases, but even healthy individuals can get sick. Heat waves are known to lead to a peak in death rates, too, which is something to keep in mind.

If you have signs of heat stress, like muscle cramps, rashes or severe thirst, go inside, get into the shade and drink water. You need to cool down quickly so that you can recover. If you do fall ill, seek medical care. Your workers’ compensation should cover your medical costs and lost wages.
