These highway driving tips can keep you safe

Driving on the highway is a way of life for many people, as it’s often the fastest and most efficient way to get from point A to point B.

If you spend any amount of time on the highway, there are tips you must follow to maintain a high level of safety.

  • Watch your speedometer: It’s easy to speed on the highway, but doing so increases the chance of an accident. Know the speed limit and obey it at all times.
  • Don’t follow too closely: The closer you get to the vehicle in front of yours the less time you have to stop in the event of an emergency.
  • Share the road: You’re not the only person on the highway, so you need to take other drivers into consideration. This is particularly true of large trucks that need a bit more space to operate safely.
  • Stay in the right lane: The left lane is for passing, so stay in the right lane unless you need to move around a vehicle.
  • Stay focused: It’s easy to lose your focus when driving on the highway, such as by reading a text message or adjusting the radio.

There will be times on the highway when you come across another driver who is breaking the law. From speeding to illegal passing, you never know what you’ll see.

If another driver causes an accident on the highway, move to safety and call 911. Your health is your top priority, but you’ll also want to learn more about the cause of the crash and the steps you can take to file an insurance claim.
