Understanding autism as a disability

On Behalf of | May 2, 2018 | Uncategorized

Living with a disability is difficult no matter a person’s age. For a child, a disability may hinder their developmental years causing financial burdens for their parents, as they require more medical attention. For adults, a disability can be challenging because it might make it impossible to hold down a job. This in turn creates financial challenges because they have no income.

Autism impacts both children and adults, and this mental condition can present some challenges to those living with this disability. Last month was autism awareness month, and this served as a reminder of how much this disability does impact society. Roughly 1 in 68 children suffer from Autism Spectrum Disorder. This disability can be diagnosed as early as the age of 3.

Because autism is a non-curable condition, it is a mental condition that will carry with the child all the way to adulthood. This means that, an adult, an individual could find it difficult communicating verbally and non-verbally, having social interactions and even participating in leisure activities. The same challenges that impact children could still impact them as an adult.

Depending on the severity of the disorder, a person may be very limited when it comes to carry for him or herself. This could also mean that the individual is unable to work. The inability to work presents financial challenges, as it can make it impossible to pay for basic needs. This is where Social Security disability benefits can make a huge impact. When a person suffers from a qualifying disability, it is possible to apply for and receive monthly benefits.

Those suffering from a mental condition or any other type of disability should explore their options. No one wans to be limited by a disability, especially when it comes to caring for one’s self and meeting his or her basic needs.
