Obtaining SSD benefits for a mental disorder

It can happen at birth, during your youth or even while you are an adult. A diagnosis of a mental health condition could happen at any point in a person’s life, causing some shock, overwhelming emotions and leaving many wondering what to do next. While medical care and treatments are available, this does not always mean he or she will be able to lead a normal life. For some, the mental condition is so severe that it is debilitating in multiple facets in life.

Being unable to leave the house, care for yourself or even hold down a job is a difficult reality to face. Mental conditions can be very debilitating, causing financial strain on top of physical, emotional and mental hardships. Thus, it is important for these individuals to explore their rights to collect Social Security disability benefits.

In order to collect these benefits, however, one must be able to prove that their mental disorder prevents them from being able to work. To accomplish this, an applicant will need to provide medical documentation that proves he or she is suffering from the claimed mental condition. It is often more difficult to prove a mental impairment when compared to a physical disability because one cannot see a mental impairment with their naked eye. Therefore, additional information and documentation might be necessary.

Common mental conditions eligible for SSD benefits include schizophrenia, autistic disorders, mental retardation, anxiety and bipolar disorder. Even if a person is suffering from a mental condition that is not listed by the SSA, it is still possible to pursue SSD benefits. One only needs to prove that their mental condition exists, that it prevents him or her from being able to work and it is expected to last for at least a year or result in his or her death.

Applying for SSD benefits is difficult even when it is clear that an applicant is suffering from a disability. Because the reconsideration and appeals process can take some time, it is important to take the time to submit an initial application that evidences and proves eligibility for SSD benefits. This could help reduce the chances of a denial.
