Benefits for diseases related to addiction or alcoholism

It is a sad fact that many Florida residents in Osceola County suffer from the burden of a drug or alcohol problem. Many of these people are high functioning enough to be able to hold down a job, and many may put years of service in to their profession.

However, in many cases, a person’s addiction eventually catches up with him or her in the form of a serious or even debilitating health problem. Take, for example, the case of liver disease. While liver problems can result from perfectly natural causes, in many cases, a person who drinks too much, too often will wind up with a liver condition that could mean the person can no longer work in his chosen profession.

Fortunately, as a no fault system, Social Security Disability is a program which is also open to Floridians with drug and alcohol problems, even if their disabilities are related to their addictions. This means that, so long as they otherwise qualify for the program, someone trying to overcome a drug or alcohol habit can still get the help they need should they develop a significant medical condition which keeps them out of their line of work. This is true even if the illness is to some extent of the person’s own making, as in the case of someone who has developed alcohol-related liver disease.

There is a slight wrinkle in this rule, however, which is that in the right types of cases, the Social Security Administration can insist that a person applying for benefits go and get appropriate drug or alcohol treatment. Usually, the cost of this treatment will be covered, but a person has to complete the treatment successfully in order to keep drawing monthly benefits.
