Disabling injuries suffered by office employees

Whether you live a very active and adventurous life or you choose to remain calm and laidback, injuries can happen to anybody. Unfortunately, the risks we take in life do not always designate the risks of suffering an injury in his or her everyday life. One place where injuries could present themselves is in the work environment. In fact, even a simple or minor incident could result in a serious work injury, causing an individual to suffer a temporary or permanent disability.

While working in an office appears to be a relaxed and safe environment, it is surprisingly filled with a wide variety of potential injuries. Working indoors, seated at a desk and typing on a computer all day is an excellent way to suffer some of the top injuries workers can develop. This includes injuries to the back and neck, suffering from vision strains and having pain in the hands and wrists.

While these injuries stem from the roles of the employee in the work environment, injuries could result from others making mistakes. This could include falls caused by objects left out, furniture that is not well maintained, faulty electrical cords and even poor ventilation, lighting and air quality.

The most common injury suffered in the workplace is caused by a fall. Additionally, it is also the cause of the most disabling injuries suffered by employees. In fact, statistics claim that workers are two to 2.5 times more likely to suffer a disabling injury due to a fall than non-office workers falling. These falls are commonly caused by tripping over an open desk or file drawer, loose electrical cords, wires or carpet, bending for something while seated in an unstable chair, using a chair instead of a ladder, slipping on a wet floor or a fall because of inadequate lighting.

Lifting heavy objects, being struck by moving or stationary object or poor ergonomics at a workstation, frequently causes other common injuries in the office. No matter the cause of a disabling work injury, it is important that employees understand their rights and options. In order to address the costs associated with a disabling injury, an employee could seek benefits through Social Security disability. If eligible, an employee could cover their basic needs while they are no longer able to work.
