Disabilities are not always easily seen on the outside. Many individuals in Florida and elsewhere suffer from mental conditions that often go unnoticed by others. Nonetheless, a mental condition can be just as debilitating as physical impairments. And while disabilities caused by serious injuries and illnesses can make it challenging to navigate life, it is important to understand what is defined as a disability, what type of disability is most commonly suffered and what can be done by those living with disabilities.
Based on current statistics, the most debilitating illnesses in the United States are mental illnesses. While many are quick to assume that cancer and heart disease tops this category, these are the most serious illnesses but not currently the most commonly suffered debilitating illnesses. Compiled data indicates that roughly 62 million Americans suffer from a mental illness. This means that one in 17 Americans live with a serious mental condition.
When it comes to children being included in the picture, data suggests the number rises to around 80 million Americans suffering from a mental illness. It is believed that around 20 percent of them are children between the ages of 13 and 18. Additionally, 13 percent accounts for those between the ages of 8 and 15.
With regard to the types of mental illnesses commonly suffered, they include schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and major depression. While these are known to be serious conditions, they do not always have the label of a disability. Despite that, many adults and children live with these conditions, often struggling to live a normal life. This can make it difficult to maintain substantial gainful employment and complete their daily life functions without assistance.
When individuals suffer from a mental illness, it is important that they consider their options and rights. Social Security Disability could be available. SSD benefits can provide financial assistance; helping mental illness sufferers the ability to meet his or her basic living needs.
