How do I know if I’m eligible for Social Security benefits?

Kissimmee residents who are suffering from a disability and are unable to work, may be entitled to Social Security Disability benefits. A disability, as defined by the Social Security Administration, is defined as an illness that is not temporary or short term. This means that the illness must cause a medical or physical disability for more than 12 months, or one that it is determined will inevitably lead to death.

If you are unable to perform work activities such as standing, sitting, walking, reaching, lifting, or even properly communicating, you may be eligible for disability benefits. The disability must be the primary factor prohibiting you from doing the tasks necessary to work.

In order to be granted benefits, you must first prove your disability. This can be done in a few ways. You may use a diagnosis by a physician combined with laboratory findings or clinical signs that fall in line with a corresponding condition listed. You may also use medical records from a hospital, or findings from a laboratory. If your symptoms are not listed, you may still be eligible by proving that you’re unable to engage in “substantial gainful activity” in the workplace.

Once you believe you are eligible, there are various forms and questionnaires that must be completed, along with your filing of medical records for the Social Security Administration to evaluate your situation and make a determination. If you have any questions or problems during the application process, it may be beneficial to seek advice and guidance from an attorney who is familiar with social security disability benefits for illnesses to aid in getting you the proper benefits.
