Many people who are suffering from an illness or disability in Kissimmee, throughout the state and across the country, fulfill many of the requirements to receive benefits from the government to help them through their issues, but don’t meet all of them and are therefore denied Social Security. When it comes to Social Security disability, there are rules that must be followed to receive benefits. These can be confusing and there are nuances that need to be understood to improve the chances of being approved.

A 41-year-old woman afflicted with ALS – Lou Gehrig’s disease – and her family have been dealing with the dreaded disease for seven years. Her husband states that she is only able to communicate with her eyes and the problems associated with her disease have extended to their financial situation. They were denied Social Security because she didn’t work long enough to receive benefits. They were also unable to receive other forms of governmental assistance. Given the public nature of the woman’s health problems, a local news station contacted officials at the department and the case is being examined more closely with the hope that she will soon receive benefits.

The purpose of SSD benefits is to help those who are in need of governmental assistance. There are numerous factors that go into whether or not a claimant will be approved. For people who have worked for at least five of the previous ten years, taxes were taken out of their paycheck to allow eligibility for benefits. Those who are below a certain level of income can receive other forms of SSD benefits. In addition, a child can receive benefits if his or her impairment is sufficiently severe. When facing these physical or mental issues, it’s imperative to know the requirements and how to navigate the system to have a solid opportunity to be approved.

In the case of the woman suffering from ALS, her family was financially strapped due to her illness and their failure to meet the criteria on several levels. Luckily, they are having their case re-examined due to a news station’s intervention. For those who are confronted with problems similar to this, before getting to the point of desperation, the wise first step is to seek legal assistance.
