Even a short fall can lead to a serious brain injury

You probably know that you can suffer a head injury if you fall, but did you realize that a fall on the same level can be just as dangerous as a fall from a height? If you fall because of tripping or slipping, you could injure yourself just as badly as if you fell from a tree, platform or even down the stairs.

Traumatic brain injuries can happen if you hit any part of the skull on a sidewalk, curb, table or other structure even though the skull is strong. That’s why it’s so important for people to understand the signs of serious head trauma and to seek emergency care if they have symptoms. The physical symptoms of a moderate to severe brain injury include:

  • Losing consciousness
  • A persistent headache that continues to worsen
  • Seizures
  • Convulsions
  • Trouble waking from sleep
  • Poor coordination or a loss of coordination
  • Weakness or numbness
  • Unusual dilation of one or both eyes
  • Clear fluids draining from the ears or nose
  • Slurred speech
  • Extreme confusion

Anyone who exhibits one or more of these symptoms after a fall should seek medical attention. Even if they seem okay at the moment, they should be monitored for worsening symptoms and treated appropriately for the resulting brain injury.

If you fell because of a trip hazard at a theme park, slick floor in a supermarket or any other situation that should have been avoided with the right maintenance or warnings, then the property owner could be held liable for your medical costs and other expenses and damages. It’s wise to consult an attorney.
