Suffering from PTSD? You may qualify for disability benefits

The men and women who serve in the military provide a great service to the United States. However, they often experience things that can be traumatic and painful during their time in service, coming home with both physical and emotional scars. In some cases, the mental and emotional impact of a traumatic event can keep a former Florida servicemember from working in another capacity.

If you or a loved one served in the military, you know how difficult the acclimation to civilian life can be. For some, the transition is impossible for mental health reasons. This may keep a person from holding any type of employment that would provide a reasonable income and standard of living. For people who are experiencing this, it may be possible to apply for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration.

PTSD and disability

One of the most common types of mental health disorders experienced by former military servicemembers is post-traumatic stress disorder. This is a condition that can make it very difficult for a person to function in certain types of environments. Even with treatment, it can be difficult to manage the impact of this type of illness. The Social Security Administration considers severe cases of PTSD to be a valid disability.

PTSD often affects people who experience or witness particularly difficult or traumatic events, such as things that can happen in combat or during military operations. Symptoms of PTSD can include the following:

  • Flashbacks of the event, often happening without warning
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Experiencing outbursts of anger or aggression
  • Thinking negative thoughts or thoughts of self-harm

These symptoms can lead to the development of anxiety, chronic fatigue and difficulty functioning in certain types of social situations. While some PTSD victims are able to live normally with medication and support, that may not be the case for you. If you find that you are unable to work, you may want to consider moving forward with a disability claim.

Filing a claim

If you are considering a disability claim because you are suffering from PTSD, you do not have to walk through the process alone. It may be helpful to work with an experienced attorney from the very beginning stages. An assessment of your case can help you understand eligibility requirements and what type of documentation you may need to gather in order to secure the benefits you deserve.
