These types of distracted driving are often overlooked

When it comes to distracted driving, most people think about one thing and one thing only: cellphone use. They know it's a bad idea to text and drive, so they put their phone away in an attempt to pay more attention to the road.

While cellphone use can absolutely cause a motor vehicle accident, there are many other types of distractions that also come into play. Here are five that are overlooked:

  • Eating and drinking: Don't get the idea that it's okay to eat your breakfast or lunch while driving.
  • Smoking: If you must smoke while driving, it's best to move to safety before you light up.
  • Pets: If you're driving with a pet in your vehicle, such as a dog or cat, don't worry about what it's doing.
  • Adjusting your seat: You need to do this before you hit the road, not while you're trying to control your vehicle and watch what's happening around you.
  • Reading a map: Even though technology has made maps obsolete for some people, there are others who still use them. You should never attempt to read a map while driving.

If you continually overlook these types of distracted driving, you are increasing the risk of an accident.

While you're doing your best to pay attention to the road ahead, don't be surprised if you notice a distracted driver in close proximity to your vehicle.

If you're part of a distracted driving accident, move to safety and call 911. You want the responding officer to file a police report, as doing so will work in your favor when making an insurance claim and taking steps to protect your legal rights.
