These ladder safety tips are sure to keep you safe

While there is always the potential for a workplace accident, there are things you can do to enhance your safety. For example, there are a variety of ladder safety tips that should never slip your mind.

If working on a ladder is a big part of your day, maybe because you work as a painter or window cleaner, here are some tips to remember:

  • Inspect the ladder before you take the first step
  • Make sure the ladder has slip-resistant pads
  • Beware of any electricity in the area, such as overhead power lines
  • Set the ladder on firm and level ground
  • Never place a ladder in close proximity to foot or vehicular traffic
  • Always maintain three points of contact with the ladder
  • Never step on the top rung
  • Never carry a load that could result in a loss of balance
  • Don't stretch, lean or pull when on a ladder
  • Let others know when you're using the ladder

The more often you use a ladder the more likely it is that you'll stop following these safety tips. Your confidence may grow to the point where you assume nothing could ever go wrong.

If you make any mistake when using a ladder, even an innocent one, it can result in an accident.

A ladder accident is a big deal, so make sure you receive medical attention and report the incident to your employer. Depending on your injuries, you may be unable to return to work in the future. This could result in the need to file a claim for workers' compensation benefits.
