What requirements must be met for Social Security Disability?

Qualifying for Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits from the Social Security Administration (SSA) can be difficult for some and very easy for others. It all depends on the individual situation. The application process is straightforward and if you don’t follow it step-by-step, you risk having it denied the first time. So, what requirements must be met in order to obtain Social Security Disability benefits in Florida?

The very first requirement, which cannot be overlooked, is that in order to qualify for these benefits you must have worked in a job that is covered by Social Security. The next requirement is that you need to have suffered a disability that is listed or meets the definition of a disability by the SSA. The benefits are paid monthly to people who are unable to work for one year or longer because of their disability or illness.

Other requirements include having worked long enough and recently enough in order to qualify for the benefits. You will be assigned work credits from the SSA when you apply for benefits. These credits are issued based on your self-employment income or total yearly wages. A person is eligible to earn no more than four of these work credits each year.

The number of credits required to receive benefits depends on the age of the worker. Younger workers will have less credits, so their requirement will be less than older workers who have had the ability to earn more work credits.

Benefits from the SSA are for those who have been disabled or are ill and can no longer go to work. Some benefits expire after a period while others might last longer depending on the type of injury or illness.
