Generalized anxiety disorder is a serious mental health condition

A previous post on this blog talked about how our law office represents Kissimmee, Florida, residents, as well as those who live throughout Central Florida, in claiming Social Security Disability benefits for anxiety-related mental health conditions.

One of the conditions mentioned was Generalized Anxiety Disorder, or GAD, but this condition may require a little clarification. Generalized Anxiety Disorder is not just a fancy name for someone who is particularly nervous or prone to worrying a lot, as that would imply that the condition may be just something someone has to live with or, at worst, something that can be treated with the right medicine.

GAD is in fact a medically diagnosable condition in which a person shows too much concern for things like money, jobs, and the like, even when they do not want to. They may also have a constant looming sense of disaster or that the worst is going to happen to them or their loved ones. Oftentimes, there is no real reason for the person to be worried, but he or she may figure it is easier to be worried than get taken by surprise at a bad turn of events. When a Florida resident lives like this for more than six months, a diagnosis of GAD is possible.

The symptoms of GAD can include fatigue, difficulty with sleeping or waking, tense muscles and problems with concentration. Thankfully, in cases are relatively mild, these symptoms, and the underlying cause, can be treated so that a person can live and work normally and can even have a lot of joy and happiness in their life.

However, in severe cases, a person may get so overcome by worry and stress that he or she will not be able to go to work or even handle certain important functions of daily life. In these cases, a person may be eligible for disability benefits.
