Qualifying for disability with severe depression

Many people in Kissimmee and the surrounding parts of central Florida will suffer from depression at some point in their lives, as it one of the most common forms of mental illness.

While many victims of this conditions are fortunate enough to be able to live a reasonably normal life with the proper medicine and treatment, the most serious cases of depression can make it difficult if not practically impossible for Floridian to get out of bed, much less to hold a job and earn an income.

As with most other mental conditions, a person with major depression can qualify for disability benefits, so long as he or she meets the requirements of the Social Security Administration.

When it comes to depression, the Social Security Administration is going to first want to determine if the condition is severe enough to qualify as a true disability. Generally speaking, the Administration will not consider untreated depression a disability, so it is very important for a person who cannot work because they are depressed to get the help they need as soon as possible.

The Administration will also look for specific symptoms which, in its opinion, are debilitating. In this respect, the Administration will consider any depression which lasts more than 2 years a disability, so long as the condition has had some significant impact on a person’s ability to work.

In addition to showing that one’s depression is significant enough to qualify as a disability, a person will also have to show that he or she is unable to work within his or her skill set for at least one year.

While it can be hard for a Florida resident to get approved for disability benefits based on their having depression, it is not impossible, particularly when a person gets the help of an experienced Social Security disability attorney.
