Obtaining SSI benefits for children is possible

This blog has discussed the many different types of illnesses and injuries that can afflict Kissimmee, Florida, adults and prevent them from being able to go to work.

When this sort of misfortune happens to a person, he or she can apply for Social Security Disability benefits under the SSDI program, and the amount he or she can draw in benefits is related to how long he or she has worked and what he or she has put in to the system.

However, adults are not the only ones who can suffer under severe disabilities. Many children also have profound physical and mental limitations, including but not limited to autism, severe ADHD and various birth defects.

Even though these children have no work history, there is no doubt that their parents will need financial assistance to help their children effectively. For instance, these children will likely need additional medical care and treatment and, in some cases, psychological counseling. Moreover, these children also often need extra care and support on a day-to-day basis.

While these children cannot draw SSDI benefits, they are eligible for Supplemental Security Income, or SSI, provided they have what the Social Security Administration calls “marked and extreme” limitations and meet the other legal requirements. Meeting these requirements can be a difficult task, since it often involves gathering the appropriate medical evidence and presenting other documentation of the disabling nature of a child’s condition, as this is sometimes not obvious to an outside observer.

Our law office represents Florida parents who have disabled children and need financial help with meeting those children’s needs. While there are never any guarantees, we have over the course of our experience developed techniques which we believe to more reliable and efficient approvals of benefits.
