Understanding myths associated with the SSD application process

On Behalf of | May 17, 2017 | Social Security Disability

Whether you or a loved one are suffering from a disabling condition, injury or disease, it is clear that living with a disability has their challenge. For some residents in Florida, it can be difficult to meet the rising and accumulating costs of medical treatment and care associated with a disability. Thus, many individuals with disabilities apply for Social Security disability in order to help them meet their financial needs.

For those applying for SSD benefits, there can be some apprehensions and fears. This is often due to the various myths associated with the application process and how benefits are handled. This post will focus on the common myths associated with SSD benefits and the important fact people with disabilities should be aware of.

One common myth is that applicants shouldn’t even bother trying because they will just be denied. While many initial applications are denied, this is not the end of the road for applicants. There is a multi-step appeals process available if an applicant is denied and not approved after reconsideration.

Another myth is that SSDI payments will replace a recipients work income. It should be noted that the average monthly benefit payment in 2015 was $1,165. This payment is not designed to replace a recipient’s income but rather help them meet basic living needs and replace some of their lost income because he or she is unable to work.

A final common myth is the belief that if a medical doctor determines that an applicant is disabled this will guarantee that the applicant will be approved. While medical documentation is necessary, this alone does not mean that an applicant will qualify for benefits. However, detailed and complete medical evidence will help an applicant’s chances if they meet the SSA’s definition of disability.

Applying for SSD benefits can be confusing and complex. Thus, it is important that applicants understand the process, the steps they need to take and what rights they have. This will ensure that an applicant will get through the process with their rights protected.
