Can travel payments be provided when seeking Florida SSD?

On Behalf of | Nov 18, 2015 | Social Security Disability

Some Florida residents who are seeking Social Security Disability (SSD) benefits might need to have extra medical examinations or tests given to determine if they meet the medical requirements. However, these people might have to travel to take the tests. For those who need financial help for this, it is possible to receive it. Costs will be defrayed or covered for these tests through the State Disability Determination Services (DDS).

The decision as to whether a person is disabled is made by the DDS. Because of that, if there are medical examinations that must be taken by the claimant to come to this determination, the DDS will pay for it.

In addition, all the arrangements for the examinations will be completed by the DDS. In order to have the travel costs paid for, the DDS will send the claimant a letter regarding the need for these examinations or tests. It will inform the claimant of what must be done after the examinations or tests have been completed to have the travel costs paid.

Those who have specific issues or require money for travel prior to going to take the test can also be compensated. The claimant needs to inform the person from the DDS who sent the letter about the need for financial help. An example might be for a person who does not drive and needs someone else to drive them to the location where the exam or test is being conducted.

The travel costs must be given to the DDS via a form that will be filled out. Receipts might be required. If money paid prior to the tests did not fully cover the costs, the DDS will reimburse the claimant. If it cost less, the money will have to be paid back. A claimant who needs someone to accompany them to the test might also be able to receive money for that from the DDS.

Finances should not stand in the way of a person who needs SSD benefits. Those whose disability status hinges on an exam or test, but are unable to pay for it, can for the travel costs can receive money from the DDS. It is important to understand these another other issues with help from a qualified attorney experienced in Social Security Disability claims.
