Can I receive SSD benefits for kidney disorders?

It is difficult enough for people in Kissimmee who are suffering from an illness to deal with its ramifications without having to concern themselves with how they are going to make ends meet. Unfortunately, for many, this is a common worry. This is why there is Social Security disability for illness available. A health problem that often arises has to do with the urinary system, specifically the kidneys. These are known as genitourinary disorders.

If genitourinary disorders result in chronic kidney disease, there is certain evidence that must be presented to prove it in order to receive SSD benefits. There must be documented signs, symptoms and lab findings to indicate that there is chronic kidney disease. As part of the evidence, there need to be records of treatment, examinations and documentation as to whether or not the treatment was effective. This evidence must be from a minimum of 90 days prior to applying. It is, however, possible that there could be a finding of disability without this time period having passed.

Another important measuring stick for SSD benefits due to kidney problems is the estimated glomerular filtration rate, also known as eGFR. This estimates the capacity of the kidneys to filter and accounts for different variables like age, sex and size of the body. If the eGFR is included in the medical evidence presented, it will be considered when the chronic kidney disease is evaluated. A kidney or bone biopsy is also useful for providing evidence. There will need to be a pathology report of these tests. If no report is available, a medical source will be able to provide testimony to verify the report.

There are other factors that could come into play such as the possibility of needing dialysis, a kidney transplant or other treatments and procedures. Since kidney problems can result in medical expenses and the need for long-term care, it’s important to understand how to move forward in applying for SSD benefits. Speaking to an attorney experienced in helping clients pursue benefits for kidney disorders and other illnesses can help in filing a claim.
