What are the added needs for children with disabilities?

As discussed recently, having a child diagnosed with a disability is tough news to hear. Providing for a child with disabilities can be life changing. While raising a child in general can be costly, the added costs of raising a child with a mental, emotional or physical disability can add numerous expenses. On top of the medical bills associated with the child’s needs, parents will also have to make numerous and constant accommodations for their child.

Roughly 500 to 600 million people across the globe are currently living with disabilities. Of these, roughly 10 percent are children and youth. There are many causes of disabilities suffered by children. These include factors such as genetics, conditions caused during pregnancy or childbirth or a condition developed during infancy. For young children, a deficiency in certain minerals could result in intellectual disabilities. This could also occur if a mother is deficient during pregnancy. Based on data from the World Heath Organization, early detection and taking preventative measures could prevent roughly 70 percent of childhood disabilities.

What are the added needs for children with disabilities? A child with disabilities is likely to suffer educationally. A disability could affect their educational possibilities; thus, impacting their future following graduation. Additionally, some children are unable to cope with their disabilities, resulting in their condition harming them even more. Experts suggest that taking an early intervention could actually improve the life of those living with a disability.

Taking an initiative to address the basic needs of children with disabilities does not have to be complicated or expensive. In some cases, this could be achieved by taking advantage of community resources. While this might be the case in some situations, this may not be in the case in others. A child might need medications, rehabilitation and on-going therapy and care. This can be costly, especially if a parent needs to modify a home or a vehicle to better accommodate their child.

Thus, it is important to consider what options are available to help in these matters. The Social Security Administration has designed programs to help children with disabilities and those that care for them. Social Security disability benefits could help them better address the various demands and expenses associated with caring for a child with disabilities.
