Can you receive SSD benefits for an eye injury?

While we might not realize it, many of the things we do on a daily, weekly and yearly basis present a wide variety of dangers. While these dangers might seem minor, some can place individuals at risk of serious injuries. These injuries could greatly impact the life of the victim, causing them to require much time and medical treatment to recover. And in some unfortunate cases, victims in Florida and elsewhere may never fully recover. With regards to eye injuries, a victim might lose their eyesight, deeming them disabled.

Every year during the Fourth of July weekend, residents across the U.S. seek to include fireworks in their celebration. For some, this means being a spectator at a public show; however, others prefer setting off their own fireworks. While this is an enjoyable and entertaining experience, it is also a dangerous activity. In fact, fireworks alone cause roughly 10,000 emergency room visits each year. While illegal firecrackers set off at home cause the most disabling injuries, the vast majority of injuries are caused by the legal fireworks, which include sparklers, firecrackers, bottle rockets and roman candles.

Every year, ophthalmologists treat thousands of patients suffering eye injuries caused by fireworks. These injuries can range from cuts and bruises to damaged corneas and ruptured eyeballs. Such injuries could mean reduced or lost eyesight, causing some victims to be greatly impacted by the injury and healing process. In some cases, this could mean the inability to work as they rehabilitate and learn how to navigate life with reduced or lost vision. This can make it very difficult to cover medical expenses and basic living needs.

Can you receive SSD benefits for an eye injury? If a victim meets the definition of disability for this type of injury, he or she could receive Social Security Disability benefits. These benefits could cover basic needs such as food, shelter and clothing. Additionally, these funds could help cover medical bills for ongoing treatment and care.

No matter the type of injury suffered, it is important to understand what options are available to victims suffering from a disabling injury. Whether it is a temporary or permanent disability, it is still possible to receive SSD benefits. Thus, applicants should be aware of the process and what rights they have.
