Understanding SSD benefits, Ticket to Work and potential changes

In Florida, people who are receiving Social Security disability benefits might not want to continue receiving the benefits forever. It is with this in mind that the Social Security Administration has implemented the Ticket to Work Program. Not only is it important that those who are considering making an attempt to go back to work understand the basics of this program, but they must also bear in mind possible changes that are under consideration.

The Ticket to Work program is open to anyone between the ages of 18 and 64 who are blind or are disabled and receiving either Supplemental Security Income or Social Security Disability Insurance. The intention of Ticket to Work is for those who are receiving disability benefits to have more options when trying to work. It is meant to help those who are receiving SSD benefits to reach financial independence and be self-sufficient. Finally, it is to lower the need for a claimant to rely on disability to make ends meet.

People who want to take part in Ticket to Work can join an approved service provider to do so. There are options including the State Vocational Rehabilitation agency or the Employment Network. If a person takes the assignment, the agency will provide services to assist the recipient in gaining employment. Services can include training, career counseling job placement, vocational rehabilitation and support services.

The SSA is pondering the possibility of creating new rules to help those who are receiving SSD benefits to seek employment. That includes Ticket to Work. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, only 17 percent of people who are disabled are employed. With the idea behind the program to assist disabled people in finding work, the SSA is seeking suggestions from the public regarding how to improve the system.

Whether a person is seeking approval for benefits or is trying to return to work, they must understand some key factors with regard to their Social Security benefits. Speaking to an attorney about the ins and outs of disability benefits can provide insight and assistance with a case involving these issues.
